Indy Sailor Killed at Pearl Harbor Identified

29-year-old Edward Shelden was a Navy Fire Controlman 1st Class serving aboard the USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The remains of an Indianapolis sailor who was killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor have been identified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said Monday that it had identified the remains of 29-year-old Navy Fire Controlman 1st Class Edward Shelden.

Shelden was serving on the USS Oklahoma when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. The ship was hit by multiple torpedoes and capsized, taking the lives of Shelden and 428 other crewmen aboard the ship.

His remains were disinterred several years ago and identified last July through DNA analysis, dental and anthropological analysis, and other evidence, the agency said Monday.

The agency has not said when and where Shelden's remains will be reinterred.
