IU Health to Consolidate Downtown Maternity Services at Riley

$142M renovation will move ob/gyn offices, second newborn intensive care unit from Methodist and University Hospitals

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A $142 million renovation of Riley Children’s Health will bring all IU Health's downtown pregnancy-related services under one roof.

Right now, IU's ob/gyn specialists see patients at University Hospital,. while deliveries take place at Methodist, and Methodist and Riley both operate intensive-care units for newborns. IU will consolidate all those services at Riley, renovating administrative and office space to create a four-story maternity complex. It'll also redo one floor of the Riley Outpatient Center.

Riley president Matthew Cook says studies indicate babies do better when their mothers are located in the same place. He says the consolidation will create efficiencies for the hospital, and cost savings for patients, who will no longer be billed for expensive ambulance rides from Methodist to Riley.

Riley expects construction to take two-and-a-half years.
