Kokomo Man Convicted of Killing Girlfriend's Baby

Jaquail Smith told police he was playing video games when he noticed eight-week-old August Minniear stopped breathing.

KOKOMO, Ind. -- A jury returned a guilty verdict in the case of a Kokomo man accused of killing his girlfriend's baby.

Jaquail Smith, 23, will be sentenced July 10 after being convicted of murder.

Eight-week-old August Minniear died from severe head trauma in Nov. 2017.

Smith was watching the little boy while his mother was visiting a friend. When Kinzie Minniear returned home, she found her son's head was swollen and rushed him to the hospital.

Smith initially told police he was playing video games when he noticed August had stopped breathing. He claimed not to know what happened and said he shook and pinched the baby until he began breathing again.

Smith tested positive for pot, meth, and amphetamines the night August died.

He will be sentenced July 10.
