IMPD officers worked to disperse large crowds of teenagers after reports of large fights and gunshots came in Saturday evening at Castleton Square Mall.
Officer Christopher Wilburn said it appears that a fight broke out inside the mall and spilled outside. Shots were reportedly fired outside mall but no one was injured as a result of the gunfire.
Wilburn said IMPD had assets monitoring social media and were aware of increased chatter indicating that something might happen at the mall. He said there were no overt threats of violence but there were several off-duty IMPD officers and Marion County Sheriff's deputies on site in case something did happen.
No arrests have been made but Wilburn said the investigation is ongoing.
Parts of the mall and the AMC movie theater were evacuated as a result of the incident. 93 WIBC's Tony Katz was inside the theater when everyone evacuated after another patron alerted those inside the theater of what was going on outside.
"Someone had exited the theater to go into the lobby area and then came back and said, 'I don't know what's going on but people are screaming and they're running this way' and you could hear the screams in the lobby," Katz said.
Katz said everyone in the theater evacuated in an orderly fashion but there was some confusion once everyone made it outside. He said they did not hear any gunshots while inside the theater.
Officer Wilburn called the incident "embarrassing and disappointing."
"There are places for children and teeangers to burn off energy," Wilburn said. "I think that this was calcuated by someone or a group of people and it's unacceptable. It's an embarrassment for their parents and it's an embarrasment for them and that's what troubling for me and I think that's troubling for a lot of officers here."
