Lifeguards on Lake Michigan: "Don't Go in the Water Today."

Lifeguards from Washington Park in Michigan City said the rip currents on Lake Michigan on Monday are the worst they've ever seen, due to strong winds.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Do not get in Lake Michigan. That's what lifeguards in Michigan City are telling people Monday.

A Facebook post from Washington Park Lifeguards Monday morning said the rip currents and "chaotic nature of the water" caused by the windy weather is "the worst they've ever seen."

They're asking people to not get into the water not only for their safety, but the safety of all emergency personnel.

"We aren't doing this to prevent you from having fun," the post says. "We are doing it to prevent you from being swept away."

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the area on Monday, saying winds up to 30 miles per hour will generate waves of 4-8 feet.
