Man Accused of Brown Co. Hatchet Attack To Be Committed

A judge has found Dana Ericson of Nashville to be "a danger to himself or others". Ericson was accused of attacking a Chinese exchange student with a hatchet.

BROWN COUNTY, Ind. -- The Brown County man accused of attacking a Chinese exchange student with a hatchet in 2015 will be committed.

Brown County Circuit Judge Judith Stewart ruled Oct. 4 that Dana Ericson, 61, is "a danger to himself or others and/or gravely ill", according to The Brown County Democrat.

In August, Ericson was found "not responsible by reason of insanity" for the November 2015 attack on 18-year-old Yue Zhang.

A psychiatrist testified that Ericson was "actively psychotic" at the time of the attack, according to The Democrat.

When given the opportunity to make a statement in his own defense, Ericson testified that he attacked Zhong because he was attempting to communicate with the Chinese government and stop an imminent nuclear war.

The Democrat says Ericson will be sent to a state hospital "as soon as possible".
