Man Gets 4 Years For Locking Kids in Closet, Homemade Cage

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A Mishawaka man will spend four years in prison for locking one of his children in a closet and confining the other in a homemade cage.

Nick Matney admitted to forcing his 6-year-old daughter to live in a locked closet. He also told a judge that he used a makeshift "cage" out of a crib and baby gate to confine his 5-year-old son.

The girl told police her father only let her out for study time and to use the restroom. The boy, who was often beaten with his father's belt, wore a diaper so he wouldn't have to be removed from the "cage" for bathroom breaks.

Matney previously pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent and criminal confinement. Four other charges against him were dropped.
