Man Shot, Killed Inside Home on Indy's South Side

The killing is the city's 149th murder of the year.

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man was shot and killed inside a home Wednesday afternoon on Indianapolis' south side – marking Indianapolis' 149th murder of the year.

The shooting happened just before 1 p.m., in the 1400 block of S. Knox Street. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was initially listed in critical condition. He later died from his injuries. 

The shooting brings 2017 to the homicide record of 149 murders set last year. In 2016, though, the 149th homicide didn't occur until Dec. 29. Reaching that mark more than 20 days earlier means 2017 could see as many as 160 murders this year.

This year's murder victims include 15 who are 18 or younger. They also include 31 women – making 2017 potentially the most violent year against Indianapolis women on record.

An RTV6 analysis of 2017 homicide cases shows 88 (approximately 60 percent) remain unsolved as of this writing.
