Muncie Man Ingests Heroin, Leaves Three Traffic Accidents In His Wake
MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Muncie man who ingested heroin left a series of traffic accidents in his wake on Monday.
Shawn Burtzo's string of accidents began after he hit a parked car on North Elm Street in Muncie. He then proceeded to hit an occupied car, a guard rail and utility pole.
Burtzo was found by a Yorktown officer who said he was "nodding in and out of consciousness" behind the wheel of his SUV.
Burtzo left each accident, and told police he did so because he was driving on a suspended license. He also told police he ingested heroin "for his safety".
The Muncie Star Press said his wife and daughter were with him during the first crash, but he dropped them off because of a court order that prohibits him from having contact with his wife.
The Star Press said, Burtzo was arrested on preliminary counts of neglect of a dependent, driving while intoxicated, driving with a controlled substance in system, invasion of privacy, and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
Burtzo was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital before being taken to the Delaware County jail.
Burtzo was charged with invasion of privacy last week, and has been convicted of auto theft, conversion, public intoxication, receiving stolen property and resisting law enforcement.
