ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind.–A woman has admitted she ran over and killed a child who was playing in his yard in St. Joseph County, in June. Kayla Bennett, 22, pleaded guilty to causing a death while operating a vehicle with a Schedule 1 or Schedule 2 controlled substance in her system, a Level 4 felony, reported WNDU TV.

Bennett will be back in court January 22. She will likely be sentenced then.

Briyson Councell, 7, was hit and killed Jun. 1. Since then, prosecutors said tests indicated Bennett had pot in her system. Bennett was Councell’s neighbor.

“He was playing in his grass like a responsible little boy. I told him to stay in the yard. He stayed in the yard,” his mother, Brittany Councell, told the TV station the week after it happened. “I sat him up and I tried to smack his back. He was trying to breathe. There was blood everywhere.”

Bennett did not have a plea deal and it was unclear what sentence she may get.
