New Palestine Student Hit While Riding Bike to School

14-year-old Kian Heise was attempting to cross US 52 when he was hit by a pickup truck, according to police.

NEW PALESTINE, Ind. -- A student at New Palestine High School is at an Indianapolis hospital after he was hit while riding his bike to school.

14-year-old Kian Heise, of New Palestine, was hit by a pickup truck Monday morning as he attempted to cross US 52 in front of the school building, according to the Hancock County Sheriff's Department.

Heise was seriously injured and is being treated at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He was in critical condition Monday afternoon but is expected to survive, the Sheriff's Department said.

The driver of the pickup truck, John Bundy, told police the boy rode in front of him and he couldn't stop in time.

Police do not believe speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Witnesses told investigators Bundy was not speeding and had his headlights on.

Police are still investigating.
