One Dead, One Critical In Double Shooting on Southeast Side

It happened at a home along Straw Hat Drive near Emerson.

INDIANAPOLIS -- One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a double shooting on the city’s southeast side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to a home in the 5300 block of Straw Hat Drive, near Emerson Avenue and Shelbyville Road, around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot.

A man police believe to be an ex-husband of a woman living at the home was accompanied by another man, and those two men tried to break in, Officer Genae Cook said at the scene.

There was a struggle over a weapon inside the home, shots were fired and the two men who had broken in went outside, where police found them shot, Cook said.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, Cook said.

A woman and a man inside the home did not appear to be injured, Cook said.

Police on Sunday night were still working to determine the order of events and who fired shots, Cook said.

Police could not confirm whether children were present in the home when the shooting happened.
