INDIANAPOLIS–A new high-tech system dedicated to catching criminals faster is what police say allowed them to catch three dangerous criminals recently.

It’s also the reason for hundreds of other arrests too, investigators say.

You might remember the death of Fishers Police K-9 Harlej back on November 13th. It was ballistic and forensic evidence at that scene that led police to the three suspects accused of committing more than a dozen violent crimes including two murders.

“Marion Co. Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced that Richard Garrett, Delance Hatcher, and Rashaana Farrow were charged with the deaths of Devon Gillespie and Anthony Mack,” IMPD Assistant Chief Chris Bailey told reporters at Fishers Police headquarters Monday.

“The three persons listed that I just spoke about were involved in 13 different incidents in Indianapolis resulting in violent crime taking two peoples’ lives and impacting the lives of 18 people through various robberies and people shot,” Bailey continued.

Since it started a year ago, IMPD’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) has helped seize 254 guns and led to the arrest of 339 people.

“In order to make true impact, in order to protect tomorrow, we have to act today,” said Fishers Chief Ed Gebhart. “Crime doesn’t know any borders, neither should law enforcement, neither should law enforcement leaders.”

The old process took weeks, if not months, to complete. Now with this upgraded system at the CGIC, results come back in as little as 24-48 hours. That allows officers to solve crimes even faster.
