Roncalli Guidance Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald to Appear on "The Ellen Show"
INDIANAPOLIS--A guidance counselor on administrative leave from Roncalli High School will make an appearance on "The Ellen Show" this week.
Shelly Fitzgerald has worked at Roncalli for the last 15 years and has been married to a woman since 2014. She has been in a relationship with her wife for the last 22 years.
When her marriage certificate was presented to Roncalli and the Archdiocese by a parent, she was placed on administrative leave and told she would have a few options. She could resign, end her marriage, or stay at the school through the end of this school year with it likely that her contract will not be renewed for next year.
Archbishop Charles Thompson said in a statement the issue concerning Ms. Fitzgerald’s employment is not about sexual orientation, but about the Church’s teaching that marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman as established and revealed by God.
A Care2 petition in support of Fitzgerald has almost reached its goal of 60,000 signatures.
She will be on "The Ellen Show" this Friday, which airs on NBC.
"The Ellen Show" is a television sitcom created by and starring Ellen DeGeneres, who is a comedian, actress, and LGBT activist.
