Saturday Snow Then Coldest Air of Winter Season

Most of central Indiana, as well as north central and east central Indiana counties, are under a winter storm watch from late Friday night through 4 a.m. Sunday.

INDIANAPOLIS-- The storm heading for central Indiana this weekend will produce heavy snow in some spots, possible ice accumulation and gusty winds for Saturday.

Most of central Indiana, as well as north central and east central Indiana counties, are under a winter storm watch from late Friday night through 4 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

WISH TV Meteorologist Randy Ollis says he is calling for as much as 5-8 inches of snow by Saturday night from the I-70 corridor northward. There will also be a lot of blowing and drifting snow.

Once the storm moves out, the cold air will move into the area beginning late Saturday night.

This will be the coldest air of the winter season. Temperatures will fall into the lower teens and single digits late Saturday night and Sunday morning will bring subzero temperatures and wind chills.

Highs on Sunday will only reach the teens, while lows will drop below zero in many locations. This is well below the normal high of 35 degrees and low of 20 degrees for this day.

The last time Indianapolis saw temperatures this cold was a year ago. January 2018 recorded seven days with temperatures below zero and seven days when highs didn't make it out of the single digits or teens.

Now is the time to take precautions in your home to prevent pipes freezing. Don't forget your pets, too!  Make sure they're able to stay warm during this weather.
