St. Vincent Puts New Clinic in Gleaners Food Bank

One-stop service gives doctors opening to emphasize importance of healthy diet

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Gleaners Food Bank has added a health clinic at its Indianapolis warehouse.

Saint Vincent Medical Group is running the clinic, which has two exam rooms and a lab for routine blood work. The clinic will be open four days a week, during the same hours the food pantry is open.

Chief medical officer Aaron Shoemaker says people who need food assistance often have transportation issues that make it harder for them to access health care. He says the one-stop shopping opportunity will make it easier for those people to get proper care.

And Shoemaker says healthy eating plays a huge role in preventive care. With a giant food warehouse behind it, he says the clinic cannot only advise patients on proper diet, but send them home with fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods.

Gleaners says if the clinic goes well, the food bank may offer similar services at some of the 250 Gleaners-supported food pantries in 21 counties across central and southern Indiana.
