State Trooper's Car Hit by Drunk Driver While Arresting Another Drunk Driver
GARY, Ind.--He had already arrested one driver for driving drunk when a second driver hit his car while also driving drunk.
That's what Indiana State Police say happened to one of their troopers in Lake County.
Just after midnight Saturday morning, they say Trooper Ala'a Hamed had already arrested Mario Rodriguez, 48, of Valparaiso. Rodriguez was sitting in the back of the police car with Hamed in the driver's seat.
Hamed said he heard what sounded like a car crashing. He looked in his rear view mirror and saw a silver Chevrolet coupe sideswipe a 2016 Chevrolet van, then ricochet off the van and hit the back of his police car. No one was in the van.
Hamed said the impact of the hit pushed his car into Rodriguez's 2005 Kia sedan. After checking to make sure Rodriguez was okay, Hamed arrested the woman in the coupe. She's been identified as Ashley Brown, 36, of Hammond.
Investigators say Rodriguez had a blood alcohol content of .16 while Brown's was .13. The legal limit is .08.
Both Brown and Rodriguez are facing multiple charges.
