Students Evacuated As Amy Beverland Elementary Catches Fire

The roof caught fire on Friday morning. More than 700 students were evacuated, said school officials.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The roof of Amy Beverland Elementary School caught fire on Friday morning.

More than 700 students were evacuated, said school officials. There were no injuries, but the students could not go back into the building.

Parents were asked to pick up their children on the north side of the school by 9:30 a.m.

Students who weren't picked up were taken to Lawrence North High School.

Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said the fire was caused by "a smoldering motor in an area under construction."
