TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — It’s an unusual local law, but it’s been in place in Terre Haute for quite some time — you are not allowed to keep chickens in city limits.

It’s ruffled the feathers of some people that live in Terre Haute. There’s even a “Haute Hens” Facebook group. WTHI says the issue was brought up to city leaders a few months ago.

Now, a chicken ordinance exploratory committee will have a meeting to talk about possibly changing the code.

Right now, the code doesn’t specifically say chickens are not allowed in city limits, but rather, “agricultural animals” are not allowed. However, the ordinance doesn’t define what an agricultural animal is.

The committee will meet Monday afternoon.
