UPDATE: Water Drops Called Off At Massive Mulch Fire In Mitchell

Firefighters say it started at Fibertech, Inc. in Mitchell about 11 a.m. Thursday.  Several firefighters were sent to the hospital for breathing in too much smoke.

UPDATE:

MITCHELL, Ind. -- The Indiana Air National Guard has called off aerial water drops on a massive mulch fire in Lawrence County.

They say windy conditions are not dispersing the water property and now Indiana DHS worker and the National Guard are working to relocate any unburned mulch.

The fire is sending a massive plume of of smoke across the town of Mitchell and County EMA is encouraging residents to evacuate until the smoke subsides.

Local schools were closed today because the smoke was so thick.

MITCHELL, Ind. – Schools in Lawrence County were closed on Friday as firefighters try to stop a large fire at a company that produces wooden pallets and mulch.

Firefighters say it started at Fibertech, Inc. in Mitchell about 11 a.m. Thursday.  Several firefighters were sent to the hospital for breathing in too much smoke.

North Lawrence Community Schools in Bedford and Mitchell Community Schools were shut down on Friday, as well as part of State Road 60 west of State Road 37 as firefighters continued to battle the fire.
