What IPS School Board Is Looking For As Superintendent Search Continues

School Board President Mike O'Connor said he is looking for someone adaptable and entrepreneurial.

INDIANAPOLIS -- School board members with Indianapolis Public Schools are still working to find a new superintendent for the next school year.

With the departure of Dr. Lewis Ferebee to Washington, D.C. in January, the IPS school board is starting to go public with the criteria they are looking for in a new superintendent.

"The job description is still demanding, but it's with a broad understanding of how education systems work, urban education in particular, but also the willingness to be entrepreneurial," said School Board President Mike O'Connor to IndyPolitics.

He said adaptability will be a key trait he will be looking for as the board tries to come to a consensus on what they are looking for. O'Connor said they are keeping their list of candidates confidential for now, but said the fact they are discussing what they are looking for in a public setting shows how "transparent" the board is willing to be throughout this process.

"It's really a question of is this person the right person for this community and this school system," O'Connor added, saying even though they may be a little picky about who they want in a new superintendent, he believes they should "cast as wide a net as possible."

Many in the community are rallying behind interim superintendent Aleesia Johnson to be given the job on a permanent basis. She led a rally of supporters at Anna Brochhausen School 88 on East 16th Street last night for an "All Women High-5 Rally."
