INDIANAPOLIS — As Hurricane Florence makes its way to the Carolina coast, it’s too soon to tell whether the storm will reach Indiana early next week, says Meteorologist Dan McCarthy with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

The storm is projected to hit North and South Carolina on Friday and sit over those states for about 12 hours starting on Friday, according to McCarthy, but one factor that will impact the path of the storm is the Appalachian Mountains.

“As we get into early next week, it’s really hard to project exactly what effects the terrain is going to have with the Appalachian [Mountains&#93 chain as far as lower levels of the storm.  That’s going to affect the whole structure of the hurricane itself,” says McCarthy.

“It’s probably not going to be until the weekend to get any really solid idea what it’s going to do,” says McCarthy, who says if what is left of the storm reaches Indiana, it will likely bring less rain that last weekend since the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon mixed with a low-pressure system and moisture from across the midwest to produce nearly five inches of rain over a three-day period across central Indiana.
