WASHINGTON — Former National Security Adviser John Bolton claims President Trump asked Chinese President Xi for help in his re-election campaign.
Bolton’s upcoming memoir set to be released soon was obtained by the Washington Post. During a summit dinner last year, Bolton says Trump told Xi that his re-election could be helped if China bought more agricultural products from U.S. farmers.
Former Vice President Joe Biden says if John Bolton’s new book about the Trump administration is true, the President’s actions have been morally repugnant.
Bolton told ABC Trump is out of his depth.
“The president may well be a superb deal maker when it comes to Manhatten real estate,” Bolton said. “Dealing with arms negotiations on strategic weapons, dealing in many other national security issues are things far removed from his life experience.”
Bolton calls Trump an “erratic” and “stunningly uninformed” commander in chief who was obsessed with re-election.
The Justice Department is trying to stop Bolton’s book from being released in a dispute over purportedly classified material. The book is set for release next week. President Trump told Fox News he wants to block the book from being released because there is “classified information” within its pages.
“He broke the law. It’s very simple,” Trump said. “As much as it’s going to be broken. This is highly classified, that’s the highest stage, highly classified information and he did not have approval. That’s come out very loud and very strong.”
Bolton was Trump’s third national security adviser and served for about a year-and-a-half. Bolton left the White House abruptly last year. President Trump said he fired Bolton but Bolton has insisted that he left on his own.
