Data Breach Exposes Personal Information Of Millions Of Americans

Equifax says criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files affecting 143 million Americans.

ATLANTA  --  Credit reporting firm Equifax says 143 million people in the U.S. could be affected by a data breach.

The company revealed the cyber security incident today, but said they discovered it originally on July 29th.  Equifax said criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files.

The leaked information includes names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, addresses, select driver's license numbers and over 200,000 U.S. credit card numbers.  Customers are being alerted by email if their information was included in the breach.

An undisclosed number of residents in the UK and Canada are also impacted.  State and federal authorities are working to investigate the incident.
