Dozens of Mummies Discovered in Egypt

Twelve of the mummies were children, according to Egypt's ministry of antiquities.

Minya, Egypt  --  Egypt's ministry of antiquities says 40 to 50 mummies have been discovered in a tomb dating back to between 323 BC and 30 BC.

"The mummies, of which 12 were children, were found in four burial chambers 30 ft. deep in the Tuna El-Gebel site in Minya, south of the capital of Cairo," according to BBC.

Some of the mummies were in wooden sarcophagi or stone coffins, while others were wrapped in linen. The mummies are reportedly in good condition.

Egypt's antiquities minister said the tombs may have belonged to a wealthy family whose members held important positions in society.

The discovery site was unveiled over the weekend to diplomats and journalists from a number of nations.
