NATIONWIDE — The National Rifle Association’s board of directors meets Monday as the organization wrestles with instability at the top.

NRA president Oliver North said over the weekend he won’t serve a second term as president. The announcement came after a bitter in-house fight between North and NRA executive vice-president Wayne LaPierre.  The longtime chief executive accused North of trying to drive him out of the NRA.

North was a central figure in the 1980s Iran-Contra scandal, in which the Reagan administration secretly sold weapons to Iran to raise money for the Nicaraguan rebels known as the Contras. They opposed the Marxist government that ruled the Central American country.
