SPARTANBURG, S.C.–Former Vice President and Indiana Governor Mike Pence told a crowd in South Carolina Thursday night that “Roe Must Go.”
Pence spoke at a benefit for the Carolina Pregnancy Center, a crisis pregnancy center in Spartanburg. Before he spoke to the crowd, Pence toured the organization’s mobile ultrasound unit.
Earlier this week, a draft opinion leaked to Politico suggested the U.S. Supreme Court could be poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide. Roe v. Wade established the right to receive an abortion without government interference.
“This has been a momentous week in the cause of life. Make no mistake about it, the purpose of the leak was to pressure the court to change direction,” said Pence.
Pence is urging the Supreme Court justices to right a “historic wrong” by overturning Roe v. Wade.
“Democrats and the radical left will never stop pushing for more extreme-related policies as long as Roe is the law of the land. I believe that we are about to enter into a new era in America where every child both born and unborn is cherished,” said Pence.
On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at a Washington gala for Emily’s List, an organization that seeks to elect pro-choice women to office.
“Those Republican leaders who are trying to weaponize the use of the law against women, well we say “How dare they? How dare they tell a woman what she can do and cannot do with her own body? How dare they?’, said Harris.
Pence responded to Harris’ remarks Thursday.
“I say with the lives of 62 million unborn boys and girls ended in abortion since 1973, generations of mothers enduring heartbreaking and loss that can last a lifetime: Madame Vice President, how dare you?’, said Pence.
Pence criticized a planned effort in Congress to hold a vote next week to adopt the Roe v. Wade decision into federal law.
