(Washington, DC) — While speaking at the White House Wednesday, President Biden asked Congress to suspend the federal gas tax.

“Today I’m calling on congress to suspend the federal gas tax for the next 90 days, through the busy summer season,” said Biden. Despite the federal gas tax being eliminated, Biden said he still believes there will be enough money to finance road project. Currently, the federal gas tax is a little over 18-cents per gallon.

In earlier remarks, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called a gas tax holiday an “ineffective stunt.”

Additionally, Biden asked oil companies and gas station owners to start dropping prices to reflect declines in the global oil market. He also called on oil companies to get shuttered refineries back on-line. Biden again blamed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for roiling oil markets. He challenged Republicans to stop blaming him for skyrocketing gas prices, since it’s a global crisis.
