President Trump, First Lady Visit U.S. Troops in Iraq

It's the president's first visit with U.S. troops in a war zone since his election.

AL-ASAD AIRBASE, Iraq -- President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit Wednesday to U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.

It's President Trump's first visit to U.S. troops deployed in a war zone since his election two years ago.

The White House said Trump traveled to Iraq late on Christmas night to "visit with our troops and Senior Military leadership to thank them for their service, their success, and their sacrifice and to wish them a Merry Christmas."

The United States has more than 5,000 troops in Iraq supporting the Iraqi government in its fight against the Islamic State.
