Toni Morrison Dies at Age 88
NEW YORK -- Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison is dead at the age of 88.
Morrison died Monday night surrounded by family and friends at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx following a bout with pneumonia.
She was best known for her novel "Beloved," which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
In 1993, Morrison became the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature. In 2012, Morrison was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award for a civilian in the United States.
Morrison was also a long-time creative writing professor at Princeton University and resided in Grand View-on-Hudson in Rockland County.
