Trump Admin. Imposes New Cuba Travel Restrictions

Cruises and "people to people" educational and cultural trips will both be prohibited, starting Wednesday.

WASHINGTON -- The Trump Administration is imposing new travel restrictions for U.S. citizens visiting Cuba.

The Treasury Department said Tuesday the U.S. will no longer allow the group educational and cultural trips known as "People to People" to travel to the island.

"Private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft" will also be prohibited from going to Cuba, according to the State Dept.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said the restrictions come as Cuba continues to play a "destabilizing role" in the Western Hemisphere, specifically propping up communist regimes in Venezuela and Nicaragua.

"These actions will help to keep U.S. dollars out of the hands of Cuban military, intelligence, and security services," Mnuchin said.

The sanctions will take effect Wednesday.
