WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is moving to make it more difficult for some legal immigrants to remain in the U.S.
A new federal rule would effectively penalize low-income immigrants who get food stamps, housing vouchers or other types of federal assistance.
During a White House briefing, immigration official Ken Cuccinelli said the rule promotes “self-reliance and self-sufficiency.” Cuccinelli is the acting director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The rule would make it easier for U.S. officials to reject green cards and visa applications. Cuccinelli noted that the new rule does not affect refugees or those who have sought political asylum.
