(Washington, DC)  —  A controversial citizenship question will not be on the 2020 census, but President Trump is taking action to determine the number of citizens and non-citizens in the country.

“Today, I’m here to say we are not backing down on our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population,” Trump said at an event in the Rose Garden on Thursday.

Trump announced an executive order that requires every department and agency in the federal government to give the Department of Commerce records about peoples’ citizenship.  Trump said this method will determine citizenship for 90-percent of the people in the U.S.

He said this information can be used by the Census Bureau to create the official census.  He pointed out that this will inform public policy decisions, including how elections are administered.
