UMBC First-Ever 16-Seed To Beat a #1 Seed

They beat the top overall seed Virginia Cavaliers 74-54 Friday night.

CHARLOTTE, NC  --  The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is the first-ever 16-seed to beat a number-one seed in NCAA Tournament history.

The Retrievers stunned top-overall seed Virginia 74-54 in first round action of the South Region in Charlotte.

Entering this game, number-one seeds were 135-and-0 all-time since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

UMBC advances to face ninth-seeded Kansas State in the second round on Sunday.

Virginia entered the NCAA Tournament as tourney favorites -- the No. 1 overall seed after going 31-2 this season, including 20-1 in ACC competition.

Virginia finishes their season at 31-3.
