Pence And Gay Irish Prime Minister Meeting Privately

Human rights activists are criticizing the decision and speculate it's because Varadkar is openly gay and Pence has a history of opposing gay rights.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Vice President Mike Pence is being criticized for not inviting reporters to his meeting with the openly gay prime minister of Ireland.

Last year, Pence and President Trump had a public breakfast with Ireland's previous prime minister ahead of St. Patrick's Day.  This year's breakfast with new Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, however, is closed to the media at the request of the vice president.

Human rights activists are criticizing the decision and speculate it's because Varadkar is openly gay and Pence has a history of opposing gay rights.

Varadkar told Irish media that if given the chance during today's meeting, he will discuss gay rights with Pence.
