Colts Sign Adam Vinatieri To Contract Extension

Vinatieri is the oldest active player in the NFL at 45-years-old. He could become the NFL's all-time leading scorer this season.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri signed a contract extension to play in his 23rd NFL season, the team announced Thursday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but multiple outlets reported that it was a one-year contract.

"Adam is one the best players in NFL history and we are excited to keep him in Indianapolis," Colts general manager Chris Ballard said. "He continues to play at a high level and his experience and production are valuable assets for our team. Adam is the consummate pro and a key leader in our locker room."

Vinatieri has played the last 12 seasons with the Colts. He previous contract expired after the 2017 campaign, which had made him eligible for free agency when the new league year begins on March 14.

The 45-year-old spent the first 10 seasons of his career with New England, and connected on game-winning field goals in each of the Patriots' first two Super Bowl wins -- in 2001 versus the then-St. Louis Rams and 2003 against the Carolina Panthers.

Vinatieri has kicked 559 field goals during his career, which puts him just six shy of Hall of Famer Morten Andersen for the most in NFL history. His 2,487 points trail only Andersen (2,544) and his 337 career games played ranks him fifth all-time in league history.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Vinatieri has earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors an NFL-record 17 times. Vinatieri has also been named the NFL Player of the Week (playoffs) on one occasion and has received AFC Special Teams Player of Month honors five times.

Vinatieri connected on 29 of 34 field-goal attempts last season, including five of six from at least 50 yards out. Two of his misses last season came during blizzard conditions in Buffalo.
