SPEEDWAY, Ind. — It’s looking doubtful that two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso will have a ride for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500.

RACER Magazine first reported the story Sunday that Honda HQ in Tokyo, Japan has vetoed a plan for Alonso run the race in a seat provided by Andretti Autosport. It’s not clear why the plan was turned down by Honda executives.

Moving forward, this means that if Alonso were to run the race come May it would have to be in a Chevy-powered car. This means Alonso’s options remain the Chevy-powered teams of AJ Foyt Enterprises, Carlin, Ed Carpenter Racing, Team Penske, and his old team in Arrow McLaren Racing.

That’s considering any of these teams are willing to give him a seat.

As for Andretti Autosport, the decision means they have an unfilled seat for the Indianapolis 500. It’s unclear who the team might recruit to fill that seat.
