EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Scandal has ended Walter McCarty’s run as the University of Evansville head men’s basketball coach.
McCarty had been placed on leave December 26th with a law fire investigating accusations of sexual misconduct and violation of the university’s Title Nine policy. An open letter from the president of the private school indicates more accusations have surfaced since then.
While the Title Nine investigation will continue, UE “has decided that, based on the facts uncovered thus far, it is necessary to terminate Mr. McCarty’s employment immediately.”
All this follows warnings to McCarty “regarding inappropriate off-court behavior with members of our campus community.”
The university is wasting no time in moving on from McCarty. The school announced hours after it was revealed McCarty was fired that they had hired former Butler University men’s basketball head coach Todd Lickliter as the new head coach of the Purple Aces. Lickliter was an assistant on McCarty’s staff last season before resigning over the summer because of health reasons.
UE said Lickliter has agreed to a multi-year deal to assume the head coaching position immediately. He was head coach of Bulter from 2001 to 2007 in which he led the Bulldogs to the Sweet 16 three times.
He was hired at the University of Iowa after his time at Butler but was fired three-years later. Lickliter was then the head coach of Marian University in the NAIA ranks from 2012 to 2015.
