INDIANAPOLIS–If you are wondering if staying at home is an effective measure in fighting the coronavirus, the Indiana State Health Commissioner says it is making a difference.

“If no one practiced social distancing, a person infected can spread COVID-19 to two or more people in just five days. In 30 days, that same person will have spread COVID-19 to more than 400 people,” says State Health Commissioner Kris Box in a video released on Twitter Sunday.

Box says that number drops significantly if half of us practice social distancing.

“Instead of infecting 400 people, that one person would infect 15 people after a month,” says Box.

That number decreases even further when you get to 75% of people using social distancing.

“(In that scenario), a person who has COVID-19 will likely only spread it to one other person after 5 days and make fewer than 3 additional people sick after a month,” says Box.

Which is why she urges everyone to practice social distancing. She says it must be done to flatten the curve of the coronavirus.

In Indiana, 35 people have died from the coronavirus and 1,786 have tested positive for it. 11,658 people have been tested. The State Department of Health gives a coronavirus update every morning at 10.
