DETROIT, Mich. — Nyheim Hines had two touchdowns to lead the Indianapolis Colts to 41-21 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Both of his touchdowns were thrown to him by quarterback Philip Rivers, who finished the day with 262 yards through the air and three touchdowns.
“I thought Philip (Rivers) played especially well the whole game, was in control, accurate really played well. And then, it was just a 60-minute game,” said head coach Frank Reich. “That’s what we want to do, we just want to keep getting a little bit better every week.”
It was the Lions who scored first midway through the first quarter on a 25-yard TD pass from Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford to wide receiver Marvin Jones.
The Colts would score 20 unanswered points going into halftime, two of those touchdowns coming from Hines. Though it was Hines touchdown celebration that seemed to be more memorable, both times doing a “full twist layout” as those in the gymnastics world would refer to it.
“I’ve had a few other teammates that have been able to do that,” said Rivers of Hines’ celebration. “It’s quite impressive. His was awesome.”
The Lions battled back in the second half driving the full length of the field out of the half to cut the Colts lead to 20-14. Later the Colts would drive eight plays for a Jordan Wilkins touchdown after a fumble from Stafford was recovered by the Colts.
A pick-six would follow on defense from Colts defensive back Kenny Moore to make it 35-14 by the end of the 3rd quarter.
Both teams would score one more time, but the Colts would come away with the 41-21 win. Wilkins ended the day as the leading rusher with 20 carries for 89 yards and a touchdown. Hines was the leading receiver with three catches for 54 yards and two TDs.
Sunday’s win is the Colts’ second true road win of the year and their fifth win in their last six games.
The Colts return home to Lucas Oil Stadium next Sunday as they will host the Baltimore Ravens.
