500 Flashback: Super Tex | AJ FOYT

He’s a self-made millionaire who came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time in the 1950’s, and has never left.

As we celebrate the 100th Indianapolis 500 in 2016, it’s amazing to consider that 2016 will be the 58th consecutive “500” that A.J. Foyt has been involved with.

Foyt made his debut at the Brickyard in 1958. Foyt started 12th, and finished 16th. In fact, the best finish Foyt had in his first three starts at IMS was 10th in 1959.

But in his fourth start, “Super Tex” topped Eddie Sachs to win his first “500”, and then started a bit of a streak, winning every three years, in 1964, and again in 1967.

Foyt became the first driver to win four Indianapolis 500’s ten years later, in 1977, and while many fans and members of the media believed he would retire after winning his fourth “500”, Foyt continued to race in the Greatest Spectacle In Racing until 1992.

Foyt led 555 laps in the “500” which ranks 4th overall, and holds the record for most miles driven in the race, most races, and most laps completed.

Foyt is also the only driver to win the “500” in a front-engine car and a rear-engine machine.
