Boilers Are Bowl Bound and Take The Bucket In Win Over Indiana

Markell Jones' career day rushing and the Purdue defense stifle Indiana as Purdue is bowl eligible for the first time since 2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Boilermakers punched their ticket to a bowl game for the first time since 2012 in a 31-17 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the Battle for eh old Oaken Bucket Saturday.

Purdue running back Markell Jones carried the ball 31 times fro and even 217 yards, while sophomore quarterback Elijah Sindelar 15-of-19 passing for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

This 120th meeting between the Hoosiers and the Boilermakers was the first time ever that bowl eligibility was on the line, the 93rd time the winner would take home the Old Oaken Bucket.

Two turnovers, one by each team, in the first half had the game tied at 7-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Purdue was able to get some distance from Indiana in late in the second quarter by way of a second rushing touchdown from Jackson Anthrop and a 49-yard touchdown pass from Sindelar to Anthony Mahoungou

In the second half, the Purdue defense turned up the pressure on Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow. Having already thrown one interception earlier in the first half, Lagow was unable to generate any kind of rhythm for the Hoosiers. In doing so, Indiana punter Haydon Whitehead was called on a whopping nine times to punt the ball away off of failed drives.

Purdue took advantage of this using Markell Jones effectively to move the ball down the field and set up more scoring drives to extend the lead to 31-10 by the early minutes of the fourth quarter.

Indiana battled back late, with Lagow finding Taysir Mack in the end zone with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Lagow finished 32-of-60 passing for 373 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

An onside kick followed with IU coming up with it, but as the rest of the day had gone, Indiana came up empty, turning over on downs and all but giving the win and the Bucket to Purdue.
