A 24-year old woman was killed Thursday morning when the white Nissan she was driving crashed head-on into a FedEx semi on the north side. Crews from the City of Carmel and Indiana State Police responded around 5:30am, and quickly shut down all eastbound lanes of I-465 near Meridian St. – where the crash had occurred.

From photos, info, to the little details – members of the law enforcement community, listeners, and media members jumped in to help flush out what is currently an inexplicable tragedy of a young woman driving the wrong way on a premier Indianapolis commuter route.

Here’s a recap of the five hour ordeal:

Around 5:30am, we knew there was a crash significant to travel on the north side.  Carmel Fire PIO (Public Information Officer) showed us things had escalated quickly:

The closure of eastbound I-465 was confirmed, a sure sign that a serious crash was in play:

Outside of the severity of the crash - as in injuries - people want a timetable on when the interstate will reopen. Bad news for north side commuters. Again, Carmel Fire PIO with the update:

Kevin Ratermann of WISH-TV was the first to confirm that it was a fatal crash:

***Note: So you know, I may be the last to report that a crash involves a fatality - regardless of how credible source is. Personal and professional reasons.

Updates on reroutes are a big thing with us.  Stopped traffic may close off you're next exit:

James L on Twitter helped us clarify that the ramp from southbound Meridian St/U.S. 31 to eastbound I-465 was closed:

Sergent Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police provided the first real picture of the crash site. It made me nautious:

Kevin Ratermann added this later. Unbeliveable:

Shea Goodpaster of RTV6 - normally in his chopper, reported numerous secondary crashes on westbound I-465 - right across from the fatality:

Here's another...

Eastbound I-465 reopened around 10:15am:

Someone died Thursday - and that's really the beginning and the end. Thank you to the first responders, police and fire crews, and public information officers for freezing there asses off in keeping us safe while trying to make sense of "how" and "why." These are good folks, who carry the unenviable task of not only the cleanup, but notifying the family of their loss. What do you tell them?

Some of us chatted about that before the afternoon commute really went into play. I think Satch put it best:

We'll leave it at that. Much love.
