IndyGo Encouraging Drivers to "Dump the Pump"

IndyGo says dumping the pump, as in the gas pump, would help save you some money.

While national Dump the Pump Day isn't until June 19, Indy's public transit system will hold events leading up to that day to try to get people out of their car and steer them toward the bus and other ways of getting around.  "We're kicking off three weeks of activities," said Bryan Luellen, director of marketing and customer information with IndyGo.  "The promotion is Dump the Pump In June.  We're partnering with many businesses to help folks get out of their cars."

This is the ninth year the American Public Transportation Association has held Dump The Pump Day, and Luellen says it's only a coincidence that it's happening right after a spike in the price of gas.  "We always see a spike in ridership when there is a spike in gas prices," Luellen says.  "Transit is one of the best ways you can decide to leave your car at home, especially with the new options in Indianapolis like Bikeshare and the Cultural Trail."

The kickoff event is from 11am until 1pm today on Monument Circle. "We will have partners such as Sustain Indy and IndyCog on hand, and we will be giving away 200 ten-trip passes for IndyGo service.  We're also giving away bikes, free rides on IndyGo for a year, and other prizes," said Luellen.  IndyGo will be somewhere else around the city every weekday until June 19th with more giveaways.
