Legislators are elected to represent your views. They act on behalf of their constituency. Even if your legislator does not currently support your position, contacting them and voicing your concerns is a good way to put your issue on their radar screen. The makeup of the Indiana General Assembly, consists of 100 Representatives serving 2-year terms and 50 Senators serving 4-year terms.
Here Are Some Tips When Communicating With Legislators
- Be specific;
- Plan out your remarks;
- Ask for action;
- Solicit support from your legislator;
- Tell the truth;
- Be respectful;
- When referencing specific bills, use the number and complete description
You should try to be clear and courteous when contacting your elected official. Being factual will help present your view in a real way without misrepresenting details. You can write a letter or schedule an in-person meeting. Also, if your issue is imminent or time sensitive, contacting your legislator quickly by phone or e-mail can be effective.
